What Does a True Worshiper Look Like?

You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of . (Matt. 12:34NIV) Worshipers aren't always popular. Those who worship God with intentionality can be some of the most misunderstood people.

Why? It's because the worshiper understands that worship is a matter of the heart, and that means you will guard your heart (Prov. 4:23) and not allow those things contrary to God's plan and purpose for your life to contaminate your heart and your spirit. What does the person who has answered the call to worship look like?

God has called us to obedience (Deuteronomy 28). God's Word is full of instances where God rewarded those who are faithful to Him in obedience. God has called us to worship Him - all of us. No denomination, level of spiritual maturity, age bracket, or socio-economic status exempts any of us
from the worship of God.

Humility. The intentional worshiper understands humility. Worship is not about us, it's about God. The worshiper will come to God in total humility, laying down everything - EVERYTHING before God so He can expose those things inside us that don't belong there.

Repentance. King David was a man after God's own heart but yet he came to understand repentance. The worshiper understands that as much as we love the Lord, we mess up sometimes and need God's mercy and forgiveness. None of us is without sin, contrary to what we may believe. All of us are subject to repentance and this is one of the stances we must take as worshipers.

Prayer. Those who have accepted the call to worship as a lifestyle understand that God has called us to prayer - much prayer (Col. 4:2; I Thess. 5:17). Worshipers understand the connection between prayer and worship. Both are matters of the heart and both require time and discipline. Both will bring great spiritual growth into our lives. I don't know where you are in your praise life, or your worship experience, but my prayer is that you've chosen to develop them both to go deeper in God. You don't have to stay where you are. God is calling you higher.
